In her music video for the song “Telephone,” pop icon Lady Gaga challenges dominant representations of gender and sexuality. This is executed through her accentuation of images not often found in pop culture, such as transgendered persons, butch lesbians, and androgyny. Additionally, Lady Gaga demonstrates the perfomative nature of gender by assuming a masculine role in a traditionally masculine setting, and thoroughly dismantles gender altogether. Her music video effectively presents new images of gender and sexuality that contrast the dominant representations of gender and sexuality that are prevalent in pop culture.
